Every day in Australia, some nine people die by suicide and more than 150 people attempt to take their own life. This is more than 3,000 lives lost every year.

Despite our advances, as a community we have not been able to reduce the stubborn prevalence of suicide among Australians and the trauma it brings to families and loved ones.

The National Suicide Prevention Office (NSPO) is the first time Australia has taken a whole of government approach to suicide prevention.

Their comprehensive National Suicide Prevention Strategy outlines what is required to provide a national, evidence-based and compassionate suicide prevention system. It aims to prevent suicide by addressing the circumstances that lead to suicidal distress and to support people experiencing suicidal thoughts and those who care for them.

Studio Binocular was engaged to develop the brand and for the NSPO – and we’re proud to have developed an approachable and engaging brand which was created in partnership with lived experience advocates.

The design of the brand is intended to reflect this national, integrated approach, which sees the NSPO working closely with state and territory counterparts, service providers, community advocates, civil society and across the whole-of-government to ensure consistency and collaboration.

Briefing sessions were run by the lived experience working group, and all concept feedback and decision-making was led by this same lived experience group. Their ambitions for the brand were to develop something which felt diverse, human and imperfect. They were clear in their desire to avoid government mistakes of the past and wanted to avoid anything which spoke to authority or the ‘medicalisation’ of mental health.

Working hand-in-hand with this lived experience group enabled us to deliver a warm and positive brand which speaks to the idea of bringing people together
across Australia to support change.

The groundbreaking NSPO Strategy calls on us all to better understand the factors which cause suicidal distress in Australia, and to redouble our efforts in addressing them.
